Yeast Infections

Almost every women will have had some experience of yeast infections. And when you  have it, you will feel a terrible itching sensation and be desperate to relieve the itching sensation. The condition known as a yeast infection is very uncomfortable. And while it can affect other parts of the skin, a yeast infection in women occurs mainly in the vaginal area.

Yeast infections in the vaginal area are  caused by a fungus named candida albicans. Yeast are microscopic organisms that normally live in peace within the vaginal area and the acidic surroundings of the vagina are not conducive to these little organisms increasing. However, when there is change in the acidity levels and the vaginal area becomes less acidic, this gives an opportunity for the yeast infection to start.

There are various reasons why the acidity levels alter.  Hormones, like those connected with menstruation can be a reason, just as much as those associated with pregnancy. Birth control pills can cause an imbalance as well as  antibiotics taken for an illness. Trapped moisture and irritation such as wearing wet clothes can also promote yeast growth.

 
 Signs of a Yeast Infection

 
One of the first signs, and very frustrating, is the itching and burning sensations in the affected area – around and inside the vagina. Sex can become very painful and the vulva can be swollen causing discomfort when wearing tight clothing. Some women experience a thick discharge . If you have never experienced a yeast infection before, you should consult with a doctor before trying any over the counter remedy.

 
Yeast Infection Treatment

 
An anti-fungal medication is usually required in order to treat the yeast infection and reduce that redness and itching on the skin. A suppository or a cream using an applicator is often prescribed to insert into the vagina. There is also ointment that can be used to ease the burning on the outside of the vagina also. Doctors may also prescribe an oral anti-fungal treatment as well.

 
It is important to see a doctor if this is the first time you have ever had a yeast infection problem as they can often have symptoms of other conditions. Self-treatment for a yeast infection when it is  something else could make your actual condition more severe. Therefore, having a professional opinion is essential to clearing up this painful, irritating skin condition.

 
Avoiding Yeast Infections

 
There are several things you can do to prevent another infection. Yeast develop in warm, moist places so do not wear tight clothing which do not allow the sweat to trapped. Wear breathable fabrics like cotton and make sure that you completely dry yourself after showering.

 
Take off your swimsuit as quickly as possible and dry yourself completely before getting dressed .
